In short: Bahrain's Golden Residency is a long-term, renewable residence for foreigners who meet one of four routes: property worth at least BHD 130,000, a salary of BHD 2,000 a month with five years in Bahrain, a qualifying pension, or recognised talent. Reported government fees are BHD 5 to apply and BHD 300 on issue. Your family can be included.

What is the Bahrain Golden Residency?

The Golden Residency is a long-term residence permit issued by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA). Unlike an employment-based permit, it does not depend on a sponsoring employer, so holders can stay in Bahrain, change jobs, run a business or retire without renewing a work permit every year or two. It was launched in 2022 and the property route was made more affordable in late 2025.

Who is eligible in 2026?

RouteMain conditionNotes
Property ownersReal estate in Bahrain worth at least BHD 130,000Threshold reduced from BHD 200,000 (reported December 2025)
Professionals (residents)Monthly salary of at least BHD 2,000At least 5 years of work in Bahrain

Retirees (non-residents)Pension above BHD 4,000 a monthNo prior residence needed
TalentExceptional skills or significant contributionEntrepreneurs, scientists, athletes and creative talent, assessed case by case

Meeting a threshold makes you eligible to apply; it does not guarantee approval. NPRA also checks security clearance, health insurance and supporting documents.

What does it cost?

  • Application fee: BHD 5 (reported).
  • Issuance fee: BHD 300, non-refundable (reported).
  • Other costs: health insurance, document attestation and translation, property valuation where the property route is used, and professional fees if you use a PRO service.

Documents you should prepare

  • Valid passport (at least six months) and a recent photo.
  • Proof for your route: title deed and valuation (property), salary certificate and employment history (professionals), pension statements (retirees), or evidence of achievements (talent).
  • Bank statements where requested.
  • Valid health insurance.
  • Family documents if you include dependants: attested marriage and birth certificates.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Check eligibility against the route that fits you best. Professionals with 5+ years in Bahrain and owners of qualifying property are the most common applicants.
  2. Prepare and attest documents. Foreign certificates usually need attestation and certified translation.
  3. Submit the application to NPRA through the official channel and pay the application fee.
  4. Complete security and medical checks if requested.
  5. Pay the issuance fee once approved and collect the permit and updated CPR (ID card) details.

Golden Residency or investor residence: which is better?

If you are setting up a company, you may not need the Golden Residency at all. Shareholders and managers of a Bahrain company can apply for residence linked to their company once it holds a Commercial Registration and is registered with LMRA. The Golden Residency suits people who want independence from any company or employer, or who already meet the salary, property or pension thresholds. See our residence permit services and company formation in Bahrain pages to compare.

Can my family be included?

Yes. Golden Residency holders can sponsor family members. Spouses and children are the usual dependants; for other relatives, NPRA applies its own conditions. Read our Bahrain family visa guide for the documents dependants need.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying on the property route with a valuation below BHD 130,000 or a property not yet registered in your name.
  • Counting years of work outside Bahrain towards the five-year requirement.
  • Letting health insurance lapse during processing.
  • Submitting unattested foreign certificates.
